Upcycle Challenge 2021 – RE:DENIM

Denim + Upcycling = RE:DENIM

Every year, 4.3 million tonnes of textile waste are landfilled or incinerated in the EU. More than 140,000 tonnes of new textiles are put on the Swedish market, but only just under five percent are recycled as material.

Denim + Upcycling = RE:DENIM

Sysav invited the public to participate in the Upcycle Challenge RE:DENIM, a competition in which the participants created new designs using used denim. They competed either in teams or on their own, creating amazing products – from dresses and jackets to an armchair and a play mat. This was displayed on the Instagram account @upcycle2021 where the public could vote on their favorite, and the winner secured a place in the finale, which was judged by a jury.

The aim of the Upcycle Challenge was to explore ways to upcycle discarded/used denim textiles and give them new value by redesigning them into new products. The results were fantastic!

What is Upcycle? Upcycling involves adding value to something that would otherwise have been thrown away, recycled, lost in storage or abandoned. Upcycling is a great way to reuse materials and reduce our footprint.
